The internet has made shopping almost effortless for those of us that would rather have a root canal than meander aimlessly from store to store in search of clothing that, not only looks good but fits well and is easy on the wallet.
Bombfell is one of the leaders in this market. So, I decided to give it a try to see how the service worked.
What attracted me to them was that I could sign up and if I didn't like what was sent I could return it at no charge. Having a limited budget, that was ideal.
The first step is to go to their website and sign up for the service.
During this process, you'll have the opportunity to give them detailed information that will help your personal stylist pick the correct attire for you.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and bet that most men know their waist and shoe size and the rest is a mystery. Few have been measured or taken the time to do so.
For this review, I chose to test the service by giving minimal information during the sign-up process. I imagine most people dislike filling out a long list of questions so I tried to simulate those customers. I wanted to see how the stylists deal with that and just how good they were at interpreting a look from the lack of information provided.
I have to say that my stylist did a really good job especially since I made her job unnecessarily difficult.
I admit it's NOT the way to go. All you're doing is making it harder for them to meet your needs and desires. Take the time to get measured. Men's Warehouse will happily do this for you and give you a card with all of your measurements so you'll have them when you need them. If that's not an option, go to almost any store that has a craft section and purchase a clothing tape measure.
Once you have the tape measure head on over to The art of manliness. They explain how to measure yourself and even have a great card that you can download and fill out for a permanent record. It is very handy. I refer to mine frequently.
Once you've finished signing up all you have to do is sit back and wait. About a week before shipping you'll get an email that will allow you to preview what your stylist has selected for you.
Depending on your preferences and the time of year, cooler temperature means bulkier items, you'll receive a box or an envelope package.
Doesn't get much simpler than that. Open it up, keep what you like and then ship back what you don't. You only get charged for the items you keep.
Returning items couldn't be easier. Simply go to the site, log in, and pick the items to be returned. During the return process, you'll be asked to give your stylist an idea of what you did or did not like about the items. It may sound like a pain but it's really a great way for you to be sure that you're getting the style and types of items you're looking for.
My first package arrived and I was really excited to see what my personal stylist came up with.
The first item was the Thelonious Silk Mosaic Tie. A very nice tie. The coloring was great. The contrast of the blue against the brown makes this tie stand out. At 2.75 inches it's the perfect width for the shortie. If you're likely to be wearing a tie without a jacket then ties in the 2.5 to 2.75 inch are really the best look. If you're a more substantial man than you can get away with the wider width ties when not wearing a jacket. It's all about proportions.
This tie would go well with a blue shirt, brown or black dress pants or chinos. Combined with a classic pair of cap toe shoes and belt in brown or black and presto, you won't have to worry about seeing the same shirt on everyone.
Overall, I was really impressed with my stylist's choices given that I really wasn't very helpful with the survey.
This delivery was a pair of Big Star Division Jeans. Big Star Denim has been making vintage Americana-inspired jeans since 1974. The LA-based company is known for its comfortable fit, hand-finished washes, and novelty stitching details.
They were a nice dark blue color with a slight fade along the top of the legs giving them the look of a well-worn pair of jeans. I had two issues with this item. They were a relaxed fit style and I prefer the fitted look and the inseam was an inch too long. There was a note about getting the length shortened if I preferred. If I'm buying online custom I don't want to have to turn around and pay an additional cost to have clothes altered.
The Sons of Fortune Hopkins Plaid SS Shirt was a quality shirt for the price. This shirt is cut to be worn untucked. Did you know there was a difference? Well, there is. Simply look at the bottom of the front and back.
As you can see the untucked shirt is cut straight on both the front and the back. They are also generally shorter overall in length. The tucked shirt is cut with a longer tail in both the front and back. These tails help to ensure that your shirt stays tucked into your pants while sitting or bending down.
The last item was the Grayers Hopper Pique LS Polo Shirt. The 100% cotton shirt in a special color exclusively for Bombfell feels like it looks. It is a heavier weighted shirt for those cool evenings in the summer or fall days.
I'm not a fan of polo shirts as the square cut to them looks boxy on me and being a shortie that's, just not very Dapper.
This months package contained two items. A clear indicator that my stylist was not happy with my lack of assistance. It also points out again how critical it is to give as much information to your personal stylist as possible so they have some direction to get you the items you really want.
The Original Penguin PS5 Solid Basic Shorts were just that, a basic. I have a few pairs of tan shorts so I chose to send these back. Shorts are usually not a great item for shorties. They only highlight our short legs. But let's face it...it's a summer must have.
The last item was another tie. The French Connection Harvey Houndstooth Plaid Tie is a nice tie with a very creative design making the houndstooth into a faux plaid pattern. The color was too dark for spring/summer in my opinion.
They have some great ties and other men's clothing that's worth checking out.
After the last month's package, I made sure to be more specific when I returned last month's items and it paid off.
The Original Penguin Seersucker Plaid Slim Shorts in the classic color and pattern. Original Penguin made its mark in the clothing industry with golf shirts. The company fell out of favor for a while but they're back bigger and better. The slim fit cut was particularly complimentary to my desired preference for fit. The classic color and pattern are back in style and look at home whether you're at the country club or running around the city.
The only issue I had with the French Connection Dip Sleeve Stripe Marlon SS Polo was that I'm not a big fan of polo shirts but adding it with this month was a great choice because it perfectly matches the seersucker shorts and the final item in this months package.
A pair of Johnnie-O Cal Twill 5 Pocket Pants. Jeans meet khaki with this pick. A trendy color would make up for some issues but for me, the cons outweighed the pros. These pants were a regular fit which looks boxy on my short frame and they were an inch too long again in the inseam.
The Ben Sherman Stretch Chino Shorts, Grayers Fawcett Classic Chino Pants, and Sons of Fortune Luke Classic Dress Shirt were all great but would have been duplicates of items I already have in my closet.
My conclusion of Bombfell's service is that while there were some great items there were some misses as well, but, all of the issues were mine, not theirs.
Bombfell is a great service if you use it as it is designed and intended. Take the time during your sign up to give detailed and specific information about your measurements and preferences.
When you receive a package and decide not to keep any of the items make sure you give as much information as you can to help your stylist craft the perfect box.
